She Walked Into a Trader Joe’s Parking Lot With Her Mom and Never Came Home

A routine shopping trip turned into a tragedy for a Long Beach family — and the story of what happened after has left thousands heartbroken.

What Happened?

On November 2, shortly before 4 p.m., 19-year-old nursing student Grace Edwards was walking through a parking lot on Bellflower Boulevard in Long Beach, California, with her mother.

A 40-year-old man, Desean Edwards, was backing out of a parking space at a shopping center near Trader Joe’s and Five Below when he struck her.

Grace suffered severe upper-body injuries. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital — but she passed away a few days later.

Was He Distracted?

According to the Long Beach Police Department, distracted driving is believed to be a contributing factor. Police have not yet confirmed exactly how the driver was distracted at the time.

Arrest and Charges

Desean Edwards was arrested Tuesday and charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. He was booked on a $75,000 bond. His next court date is May 13.
