Victim’s mother speaks after jury finds 2 men guilty in fatal JCPS bus stop shooting case

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The jury returned a guilty verdict against the two men charged with shooting and killing a 16-year-old at a Jefferson County Public School bus stop in 2021.

Demaurion Moore and Mekhi Cable are charged with shooting and killing Tyree Smith at a Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) bus stop at Chestnut and Doctor W.J. Hodge streets.

Defense witness recants prior statements

Moore’s defense attorney, Nick Boggs, called their only witness Thursday morning. Matthew Welch, who is in custody at Metro Corrections, gave brief testimony that drew a sharp reaction from prosecutors.

Welch had told investigators he and Moore were involved in a March 2021 shooting at a TARC bus stop near a White Castle. The intended target of that shooting was Rayjon Baskin, the same person police say was the intended target of the September 2021 JCPS bus stop shooting that killed Smith…
