Mango Sticky Rice was supposed to be another stray dog lost in a Louisville neighborhood. Instead, after surviving a bullet through his mouth and into his neck, the badly injured dog is beginning what veterinarians say could be a surprisingly bright second chance.
Louisville Metro Animal Services found Mango wandering in the Park Duvalle neighborhood in June, according to WLKY. The bullet narrowly missed his nasal passages, brain and eyes before lodging near vital structures, and surgeons removed it during an operation on July 27. According to Louisville Kentucky Open Data, the city publishes records tracking the number of animals taken in by Animal Services and transferred out.
Veterinarians Call Mango’s Survival A Miracle
Mango is recovering at Elk Creek Animal Hospital, where the veterinary team is treating the fractures and trauma left by the shooting. The hospital, which provides surgical and emergency care for Louisville-area pets, says Mango’s bones are expected to heal in roughly six to eight weeks.
Dr. Brad Rohleder described Mango’s survival as “a miracle” and said the dog is resilient enough to make it through recovery, according to the latest report. For now, Mango is healing under medical supervision while local rescuers work to cover the cost of keeping him alive.
Rescue Group Seeks Support And A Forever Home
The Shamrock Pet Foundation helped arrange Mango’s surgery, with the medical bill expected to reach at least $2,500.
