Baptist Health Floyd is moving ahead with a $10.3 million construction project on its New Albany campus that will expand the hospital’s emergency department and add a new chapel to the facility. The plans add another chapter to a string of multimillion-dollar upgrades the New Albany hospital has undergone since coming under its current ownership a decade ago.
Emergency Department Overhaul Targets a Busy Trauma and Stroke Unit
The project was first reported by WDRB, which detailed plans for a larger emergency department alongside the new chapel space. Preparatory work is already underway on campus, with temporary chillers installed along Trillium Drive in February, changes that have reshaped parking and ambulance access during construction.
Baptist Health Floyd sits at 1850 State Street in New Albany and has 225 beds. According to the Indiana Trauma Care Commission’s 2024 Annual Report, Indiana hospitals reported 46,930 trauma incidents to the state registry in 2023, including over 28,000 (60.6%) of all reported incidents.
Rising ER Volume Meets a Tightening Reimbursement Squeeze
The expansion comes as the hospital continues to invest in its facilities.
The hospital has already tried other fixes to relieve pressure on its emergency room. In 2022, it launched an EMS service and purchased two ambulances, an operational change aimed at speeding patient discharges and handling transfers between the main campus and other regional facilities. According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s IDHS EMS Annual Report 2024, the 2023 General Assembly provided $6.4 million per year for two years for EMS Readiness funding.
