Louisville Metro Council passed new zoning rules Thursday night to ensure liquor stores can’t concentrate in certain neighborhoods or business corridors.
The ordinance requires any new liquor stores be at least 1,000 feet from each other. These types of businesses must also be 1,000 feet from nearby institutions serving children and families, such as schools, parks, libraries and religious buildings. A proposed development that doesn’t meet the separation requirements could apply for a conditional use permit, but that would require a meeting with an opportunity for public comment and approval by a zoning board.
District 25 Republican Khalil Batshon, one of the primary sponsors of the ordinance, said ahead of the vote that the goal of the ordinance is to address the “proliferation of liquor stores” in the South End and West End of Jefferson County…
