Nearly six months after a woman was found unconscious and dying along a Fern Creek roadway, Louisville police have arrested a suspect. Gerald Cummings, 48, was indicted on August 26 and now faces felony charges connected to the fatal March hit-and-run that initially left investigators without a suspect or vehicle description.
Louisville Metro Police officers responded to a report of a person down in the 9600 block of Holiday Drive at about 8:40 p.m. on March 21, according to WHAS11. Officers found an unconscious woman lying along the roadway, and first responders rendered aid before medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene. Investigators believe the woman had been walking along 3rd Street Road near Holiday Drive when a vehicle struck her, and the driver fled before officers arrived.
At the time, WHAS11 reported that LMPD had no suspect or vehicle descriptions and asked the public for any cell phone or surveillance footage that might help identify the car involved. The case was assigned to LMPD’s Traffic Unit. It remains unclear how detectives ultimately connected Cummings to the crash nearly six months later.
Two Felony Charges, Years of Prison Exposure
Cummings is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to render aid or assist with death or serious physical injury, along with tampering with physical evidence, the station’s report notes. Under Kentucky Revised Statute 189.580, leaving the scene of an accident involving a known death or serious injury is a Class D felony, according to the Kentucky Legislature, which requires drivers involved in such crashes to stop, render aid, and exchange information…
