A Student Journalism Day brought together more than 40 student journalists Thursday from Jefferson County Public Schools to talk with local reporters and tour three Louisville media outlets.
Louisville Public Media, WHAS and the Courier Journal organized the conference along with the Kentucky Derby Festival and students and staff from the J. Graham Brown School. The student journalism group at the Brown School pitched the idea at the Kentucky Derby Festival’s Justice Fest in March.
Traditional news outlets are contracting, with fewer opportunities for budding reporters to enter the industry. Just last week, the Lexington Herald Leader laid off more than a dozen journalists. But some young people still see journalism as crucial to a thriving society. LPM’s Jess Clark spoke with several students about how they see reporting making a difference.
