LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public Schools has identified the likely cause of an environmental incident that sent six students from Pleasure Ridge Park High School to the hospital Monday: a dried-out P-trap in a chemistry lab that allowed sewer gases to enter the building.
According to JCPS, the discovery followed extensive environmental testing conducted by district facilities staff, the health department, PRP Fire Department and JCPS Police Department after the Monday afternoon incident in the school’s Technology building. Six students were hospitalized after experiencing nausea, headaches and fainting.
A P-trap is a U-shaped pipe beneath sinks and drains that holds a small amount of water to prevent sewer gases from entering a building. According to the district’s update, the P-trap a room in the chemistry lab had dried out. Investigators noted an egg-like odor and found no evidence of standing water or sewer backup.
