The Cheddar Box, a St. Matthews staple since the 1970s, has closed. Cafe, restaurant remain open

A St. Matthews deli known for its salads, sandwiches and soups closed permanently Friday.

Nancy Tarrant, who opened The Cheddar Box in 1979, said she closed the deli because she felt she was ready to retire.

“I think it was time,” Tarrant, 83, said. “I’m tired.”

Located on 3909 Chenoweth Square, The Cheddar Box was known for offering take-out lunches, catering for business events and cooking holiday meals. After opening a cheese shop in 1975, Tarrant later moved her business to Chenoweth Square, where she opened a deli and bakery.

Tarrant advertised The Cheddar Box as the “perfect place to break bread with a friend or relax with an iced tea and treat on the way home from shopping.”

Tarrant said she will miss her customers and the 12 employees that worked for the Cheddar Box.

“We had the most loyal customers,” Tarrant said. “I always loved when they brought in their children with them.”

Tarrant said Elderberry Provisions, a caterer and baker based in Louisville, will move in to her longtime storefront once some equipment is moved out.
