Tornado hits parts of southern Indiana, downs trees, power lines

CLARK COUNTY, Ind. — An EF-1 tornado is believed to have hit parts of southern Indiana on Saturday.

According to a Facebook post from the Clark County Emergency Management Agency , early survey results from the National Weather Service indicated an EF-1 tornado was identified near Underwood, Indiana, with estimated peak winds of 90 mph.

Straight-line winds of 80 mph are also believed to have impacted the area, downing trees and power lines. The Clark County Rural Electric Membership Cooperative’s Facebook page indicates that 1,700 customers were without power at one point on Saturday. As of this article’s publication, the Clark County REMC had reduced that number to 113.

The weather also kept the Monroe Township Fire Department busy on Saturday. According to a Facebook post, crews began the day at approximately 4:57 a.m. when a semi-truck reportedly overturned on Interstate 65 near mile marker 22.
