Happy Tuesday! We have a board meeting Tuesday night that I anticipate being quite intense for a few reasons. Transportation will be a big topic, with board members to receive a presentation outlining how things need to change to get students home on time next year.
Magnet changes
Transportation for magnet school students is on the chopping block.
“This is the only solution that the Operations division has found that will reduce routes below daily available drivers,” a slide in the presentation states.
While JCPS is not required to provide busing to magnet schools – nor to most of the students it currently transports – the entire district would be impacted by this move in a few ways.
Start times and boundary lines will likely need to be shifted. Some schools could see a big spike in enrollment. Some magnet programs could see a big drop. Additionally, equity becomes a big concern – given lower-income families without alternate means of transportation won’t have the same access to magnets that more well-to-do families will.
