Part of Louisville’s Waterfront Park is getting a makeover. Here’s why and who’s behind it

A portion of Louisville’s Waterfront Park is getting a makeover thanks to a $600,000 grant from the Humana Foundation.

The park’s overlook, built in 1998, is currently undergoing renovations including the excavation of soil, removal of dead and declining trees, and installation of new species more suited to the environment, park officials said.

“More than an acre of grass will replace the crushed granite surface in the area and a plaza will also be installed for special events,” the park’s website states. “By replacing the dead and declining tree canopy and increasing the green space, this project will help reduce the urban heat island effect, improve water quality by absorbing and filtering stormwater, and enhance air quality by removing pollutants from the air.”

Additional features include a new subsurface irrigation system and light poles, benches and trash cans will be repainted.
