Trial begins for man accused of running over Kansas family

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KSNW) – The trial began on Monday for a man charged with hitting and killing a member of a Kansas family.

Ava, Creek, Amy and Trey Jones were standing on a Louisville, Kentucky sidewalk in 2022 when a car crashed into them, killing Trey and hurting Ava and Amy.

Michael Hurley is charged with murder, assault, and driving under the influence.

Amy Jones told Louisville station WDRB-TV that she and Ava will testify on Thursday. This will be the first time they see Hurley in person.

“I think I will feel a little angry looking at him, thinking about how his choices, his bad choices, ruined our whole family. So, that will not be a great feeling,” Amy Jones said.

Amy says her family will never have closure because they will never get Trey, her husband and children’s father, back and says she and Ava will never be fully healed.

Ava, who KSN News has followed since high school , including when she signed up to play for the Hawkeyes , has retired from basketball after talking with team doctors and athletic trainers .
