Kentucky women get personal about 2024 election issues that matter most to them

It all comes down to choices.

Patty Martin wants her daughters and granddaughter to have the same health care choices that she had. Asa Coleman wants parents to have choices about where they send their children to school, and Mary Gatton wants the choice to be compassion when it comes to how we treat immigrants.

The Louisville women were part of a group that gathered recently at the Courier Journal to talk about the issues that are most important to them as the nation prepares to vote in an election where the stakes are high — particularly for women.

Abortion and women’s health care are crucial issues in the election, and for the first time in our nation’s 248-year history, we could elect a woman as president.

Women also are key in the upcoming election because they register and vote in presidential elections at higher rates than men and have done so since 1980, according to the Center for American Women and Politics. In Kentucky, State Board of Elections data shows there are 1.9 million women registered to vote, compared to about 1.7 million men.
