Louisville business owner granted work release after alleged assault on accused shoplifter

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) -Louisville store owner Kaushalkumar Patel appeared in court on Friday, January 24, for charges of kidnapping, assault, and wanton endangerment.

Patel runs the EZ Mart store on Algonquin Parkway. He and others are accused of beating, kidnapping, and pepper-spraying an alleged shoplifter on Oct. 6, 2024. Police say the suspect admitted to police he stole a box of vapes worth approximately $1,000 from Patel’s store.

During the hearing, LMPD Detective William Smallwood said that shortly after the suspect left the store, he realized he was being chased by a white van filled with men. Smallwood told the court, at this point, the suspect dropped the stolen vapes and tried to get to safety…
