Advocates ask for more reform to Kentucky’s juvenile justice system

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A Louisville-based organization that works to improve the lives of children in Kentucky is asking for major reform in the state’s juvenile justice system.

Records obtained by the WAVE News Troubleshooters showed a correctional captain at the McCracken Regional Juvenile Detention Center (MRJDC) in Paducah was fired after breaking the arms of two boys in two separate incidents. Other documents revealed that two managers were fired for their response to these incidents.

“If it does not break the heart of any Kentuckian, they don’t have a heart,” Terry Brooks, executive director of the Kentucky Youth Advocates (KYA), said. “At another level, it makes one angry about the failure of the Beshear administration to tackle meaningful reform in the detention system in Kentucky.”…
