Jim Caldwell’s Forecast | Gusty winds will blow in some snow

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Central and Eastern Kentucky are experiencing strong winds at the start of the day, signaling the approaching cold spell. A sharp drop in temperatures will usher in light snowfall across much of the state tonight and into early Thursday.

Let’s begin with the wind: gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected in the eastern regions this morning, diminishing to around 40 mph later in the day. This afternoon, a rapid influx of cold air will bring intensifying snowfall. Expect periods of heavy snow, accompanied by 30 to 40 mph wind gusts, potentially causing brief whiteout conditions.

Forecast models indicate intense snow moving eastward across the state today and tonight. While the relatively warm ground will cause some melting, the snowfall rate will temporarily outpace melting, leading to widespread accumulations of up to an inch, with potentially higher amounts in the southeastern mountains.
