Under the pavement: Louisville history unearthed during Old Louisville construction

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Water is continuing work to replace a 130-year-old water main in Old Louisville, but crews have unearthed pieces of the city’s history along the way.

Construction to replace the water main began last July. As crews move across neighborhoods, toward the edge of the Highlands, they found some unexpected treasures under the pavement near Oak and Brook Streets.

“The pipe indicates it was made in 1891,” Louisville Water Inspector Dennis Pike said Monday. He said the stamp on the pipe indicates it was built at DL Long, a local foundry. “If you get a hundred years out of a transmission main, Louisville Water and the community got their money’s worth.”
