Derby winning jockey fined, suspended for striking Sovereignty too many times during race

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The jockey who won Kentucky Derby 151 was fined and suspended for striking Sovereignty too many times.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority issued a two day suspension and $62,000 fine to Junior Alvarado for striking the Derby winning horse a total of eight times, which is two times more than six-strike maximum.

Alvarado’s suspension will take place on May 29 and May 30. He has 30 days to pay the fine…
