It has been a thrilling past few days for baseball player Tanner Shiver.

More than one ring was recently on the line for the Louisville Cardinals utility player. His team lost 3-11 to Coastal Carolina in the men’s College World Series semifinals on Wednesday, June 18. Although Shiver didn’t score a national championship ring, just a few days later he exchanged the ring that really mattered — his wedding band.

Before getting eliminated, Shiver told PEOPLE he was planning on advancing to finals and flying back and forth from Omaha, Nebraska, to Louisville, Kentucky. The original plan was to fly home for the day for his wedding to Katelyn Farmer on Friday, June 20, and then fly back for the first finals game on Saturday, June 21.

“Getting married on the off day makes for a unique journey and one I am excited for,” he said at the time. “When we first set the date, I was planning on hanging up the cleats last year and just going to grad school, but things changed. I am not worried about flying back and forth because I know it will all work out in God’s plan.”…
