Inside Louisville’s future VA Medical Center and the veterans behind it

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It’s a project two decades in the making. Now, a once-vacant site at Brownsboro Road and the Watterson Expressway is home to a nearly $1 billion vision coming to life — the future Louisville VA Medical Center.

And the pride being poured into every beam, every window, and every bolt of this world-class facility goes far beyond construction. Many of the men helping to build it are veterans themselves — shaping the very place they may one day walk into for care.

“This is for my brothers and sisters I served with,” said Bernard Hornschemeier, a Marine Corps veteran and glazing foreman with Pioneer Cladding & Glazing. “Some place they can come and get the treatment they need. It’s going to be an amazing building when it’s done.”…
