FOCUS | Crash reports reveal causes of semi crashes on I-65 in downtown Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On June 13, a semitruck lost control and slammed into the divider wall between I-65 South and the Jefferson Street Downtown off-ramp in Louisville. The truck caught on fire as it hung off of the overpass bridge. The driver had to jump at least 20 feet to safety.

After the driver jumped, the tractor and trailer became engulfed in flames, before eventually crashing onto the I-64 East ramp below it. The driver was hospitalized with multiple injuries but survived.

Six weeks before this, there were three crashes at the exact same spot the weekend of the Kentucky Derby. One involved a semi hauling passenger cars, another caused a semi cab to dangle off the same overpass bridge. That driver was rescued by Louisville Fire in the same fashion they rescued Sysco truck driver Sydney Thomas in March 2024…
