A look behind the different types of emergency alerts

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Phones across the state went off Tuesday morning as first responders searched for a missing boy in south central Kentucky.

The 5-year-old boy, Silas Chearer, was found dead in Hart County, and the alert was one of several ways first responders can notify Kentuckians of a missing person.

Tuesday’s alert was an Ian Alert, issued when children with intellectual disabilities or a mental illness go missing. It and the Ashanti Alert, used for locating a missing adult who may be in danger or may have been abducted, were added to the state alert system with the passage of a bipartisan bill in the state legislature in 2024…
