LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – It has been more than 50 years since labor and delivery services have been offered in South Louisville. However, that was all set to change this Fall, until the Birthing Place at Mary and Elizabeth Hospital decided not to open its doors.
UofL Health cited cuts to Medicaid, most coming in 2028, as the reason behind the decision. Of births in Kentucky, 44% are financed through Medicaid.
The community saw its last birth in South Louisville in 1974. Now, access to obstetrics service can only be found in Downtown Louisville or east of the metro…
