Day care opens to help families caring for loved ones with cognitive diseases

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A new resource for older adults with cognitive diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia has opened in west Louisville. ElderServe, which has been in operation since the 60s, opened its adult care center this month.

The new wing of their Russell neighborhood building can take in up to 75 people at a time. CEO Timothy Findley explained every detail of the new center is tailored to people needing around-the-clock care, including but not limited to those with Alzheimer’s. It will give caregivers a few hours out of the day where they can focus on other things.

“We offer respite to caregivers. So really, it’s not just those two particular challenges. It’s really any senior that is not able to stay home by themselves,” Findley said.

The Alzheimer’s Association states that around one in five Black Americans over the age of 70 are living with the disease, and are twice as likely to be diagnosed with it compared to white Americans…
