‘An abuse of discretion’: JCPS loses close to $10 million in federal grant aimed at growing magnet programs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is terminating a multi-million dollar federal grant for magnet schools in Jefferson County Public Schools. In letters sent to the school district, officials state they pulled the funding because the district is discriminating based on race in violation of the Civil Rights Act.

On June 10, 2024, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) announced it had received a $9.7 million, five-year Magnet Schools of America Program (MSAP) federal grant, which would strengthen magnet programs at Western High School and Coleridge-Taylor Elementary School. The district said it would have a focus on increasing diversity and improving student learning.

JCPS answered those questions, but Craig Trainor, Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, said he was not satisfied with the responses and that his concerns had only been exacerbated by the district’s answers…
