Jordan Traynor isn’t sure how the stolen gun ended up in his hands. He just remembers the man swinging and him pulling the trigger because, in that moment, he couldn’t see another way to protect himself.

Now 18, Traynor was one of 11 children charged with murder in 2021, the highest number in a decade.
