A Kentucky cold case that lingered for more than four decades has ended in a stunning and emotional discovery after a woman who vanished as a toddler was found alive, living under a new identity and unaware she had ever been reported missing. The case of Michelle Marie Newton, first reported missing in 1983, has resurfaced as a rare example of a decades-old disappearance finally being resolved.
Michelle was first reported as a missing Kentucky girl on April 2, 1983. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, her mother, Debra Newton, allegedly took the three-year-old from Louisville, Kentucky, claiming the pair were moving to Georgia “to begin a new job and prepare a new home for the family.” Michelle’s father, Joseph Newton, was left behind, believing he would soon reunite with his wife and child. That reunion never happened.
