Georgia’s Sweet Potato Pie Company Supports Literacy in Louisville

Sometimes, inspiration comes from a divinely led idea. The owner of Georgia’s Sweet Potato Pie Company traces the start of her entrepreneurial journey to a spiritual connection. Dawn Urrutia was an early childhood educator, not a professional baker, when she decided to take on the challenge of making a homemade pie.

“God had placed on my heart many years ago to make a pie for my family. The first pie I made was a pecan pie. I used my grandmother’s recipe. The pie came out horrible. I baked it so long all the juices were baked out of the pie,” says the founder of the pie company in Louisville, Kentucky.

The home cook then tried making a sweet potato pie, a traditional African American dessert she seldom had growing up. This time, the results would take her in a direction she never imagined…
