KY nonprofits rely on donations for-profits are snatching | Opinion

Kentuckians are known for their generosity. Whether it is donating clothes, household items or time, we show up for one another. But lately, that generosity may not be reaching those who need it most.

Across Louisville and surrounding counties, donation bins have been appearing in parking lots and in front of businesses, some of which are unmarked or carry misleading labels. While these bins may appear charitable, many are operated by out-of-state, for-profit companies that collect donations and resell them, often without reinvesting in the communities where the donations originated.

Meanwhile, trusted local nonprofits like Goodwill Kentucky, St. Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army and Shirley’s Way rely on your donations to fund critical services. Everything from job training, housing, addiction recovery and supporting local families battling cancer. When you donate to these organizations, you can be sure your contributions stay local and directly support your neighbors in need.

What you should know before you donate

• Our organizations do not use donation bins in Louisville or surrounding counties. If you see a bin that doesn’t clearly identify a local nonprofit, it may not be supporting your community…
