Inspiring millions: Kentucky boy takes first steps in groundbreaking Louisville therapy program for spinal cord injuries

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Five days a week, Whitney Stevens walks into the same rehab room at UofL Health’s Frazier Rehab Institute.

Inside, music fills the space. Physical therapists sing. Instruments shake. Her three-year-old son Elliot is moving along right with them, taking steps doctors once said might never happen.

Elliot Stevens was born with spina bifida, a condition that can damage the spinal cord and often leads to lifelong mobility challenges. He also has Chiari malformation and hydrocephalus. Early on, Stevens says she didn’t fully understand what the diagnosis meant, only that the road ahead would be uncertain…
