JCPS Superintendent addresses questions about cuts doubling, personal drivers, low morale

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — JCPS Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood reflected on his reorganization plan to the Rotary Club Thursday, explaining why initial projections of 300 job cuts jumped to 648 eliminated positions — though 273 were added back, bringing the net total close to the original estimate.

Yearwood inherited a $188 million budget deficit when he started in July. The district’s reorganization is estimated to save $30.8 million.

“When we did our initial, those were projections, and we did not have everything that we needed and it was a process,” Yearwood said when asked how the number doubled. “It was 648 that were eliminated, but we also hired back 273 so we landed pretty close to the 300 number.”…
