‘More of a nightmare’: Drivers worry proposed Clark Memorial Bridge lane reconfiguration will worsen traffic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has begun the preliminary design phase of a proposed project to repair steel components and enhance safety on the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge, also known as the Second Street Bridge, connecting Louisville and Jeffersonville.

The project is being developed in coordination with the Indiana Department of Transportation and local partners. One concept under review would reconfigure the bridge from four travel lanes to three — two northbound and one southbound — as part of an effort to reduce crashes and improve traffic flow through wider travel lanes.

Drivers react

The bridge carries thousands of drivers daily. Many use the route to avoid tolls on I-65. Allan McKinney told WAVE News he has used the bridge for years.

“Going from here to Indiana and take the Clark Memorial Bridge it’s a nightmare,” McKinney said. “Because any time during the day, you can get a backup of traffic and accidents on the bridge.”…
