Former Atlanta, Louisville police chief to be Buffalo’s first female police commissioner

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A former Atlanta and Louisville police chief is set to become Buffalo’s first-ever female police commissioner, Mayor Sean Ryan said Monday.

Erika Shields on Monday was named Buffalo’s permanent police commissioner beginning in May.

Shields is a former chief in Atlanta from 2016 to 2020 and then in Louisville from 2021 to 2023. She resigned in Atlanta in June 2020 in the wake of officers shooting and killing a Black man, Rayshard Brooks, after police said Brooks pointed a Taser at an officer while running away from officers.
