Another round of thunderstorms possible today with a warm weekend ahead

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening across much of the region, with the potential to produce damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail as large as a quarter.

Another round of scattered storms is possible this afternoon, with the favored area stretching from the southwestern South Plains into the northeastern corner. A surface trough positioned across this region will serve as the focus for storm development by mid-afternoon.

Why wind is the main threat

Unseasonably hot temperatures in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees will fuel storm development, but high cloud bases will keep hail growth limited.

Strong to severe wind gusts will be the primary threat from these storms. The combination of hot, dry air and strong downdrafts from thunderstorms will create the potential for damaging winds capable of knocking over trees, damaging structures and creating dangerous travel conditions.

Storms may persist into the evening hours, and additional convection could develop as outflow boundaries from initial storms interact with the atmosphere. Storm chances will continue each afternoon and evening through at least next Tuesday.
