July 4th is one of those holidays, along with New Year’s Eve, where local law enforcement sees more activity than any other time of the year. And in Lubbock, it’s no exception. Let’s look at some major incidents from the past few days that include a death investigation, a fatal car accident, and a shooting that left one person dead here in Lubbock.
Report of Suicide In Lubbock
At about 1:40 in the afternoon on July 2, LPD received a call of an apparent suicide. When officers arrived at the residence, they found the body of an 18-year-old woman, prompting a visit from the Special Crimes Unit.
No foul play was suspected, and the death is seemingly ruled as a suicide, although the investigation is still ongoing.
Fatal Car Accident on Milwaukee Avenue
Later that day, at approximately 9:40 p.m., officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle car accident at the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Erskine Street.
Police slowly gathered information at the scene and were able to piece together what happened. 48-year-old Zeferino Sauceda was traveling north on Milwaukee Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and begin rolling.
Sauceda was ejected during the crash and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to University Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased. Sauceda was the only occupant in the vehicle, and no other cars were involved in the accident.
Sunday Night Shooting
Finally, on Sunday, July 5, LPD rushed to the 700 block of North Ithaca Avenue just after midnight after receiving reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, 27-year-old Joe Ybarra Jr. was found with multiple gunshot wounds…
