TTU housing at capacity, students left without dorms

LUBBOCK, Texas — This August, several hundred incoming Texas Tech students will not be able to participate in what has traditionally been an essential part of the freshman experience: living in on-campus dorms. With a record-breaking number of incoming students expected this fall, University Student Housing does not have enough bed spaces to accommodate 5% of incoming students who need to live on-campus.

Last year’s record-breaking class consisted of over 10,000 students, so while University Student Housing does not have exact numbers for this year until the fall census date, an estimated over 500 students must seek out alternate housing options for their first semester at Texas Tech.

This is not the first year that the university has run out of bed space for students, and they are prepared with options for incoming freshmen. “The university partners with nearby properties to provide campus-secured housing,” University Student Housing told EverythingLubbock in a statement, “Students placed at those locations receive the same support as other Texas Tech students (i.e., Community Advisors), discounted dining options and coordinated academic, parking and hospitality resources. Our focus is ensuring every student has the support they need for a successful transition to Texas Tech.”

As Texas Tech enrollment numbers trend upwards each year, frustrated students and parents are demanding solutions. According to University Student Housing, relief could be coming in future years: “The Board of Regents recently approved plans for a new residence hall that will add approximately 1,000 beds to meet future demand.”…
