Lubbock High’s Nathan Johnson provided the only damage on the scoreboard for the Westerners on special teams with a 101-yard kickoff return just before halftime.
Abilene High sophomore Boss Hines was a standout, rushing for 180 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-clinching 49-yarder early in the fourth quarter.
TURNING POINT
It could have been Johnson’s return with 35 seconds left in the first half that gave Lubbock High a 7-3 halftime lead. But when the Eagles came out in the third quarter and scored in just four plays, that was a sign as they scored on four of their five second-half possessions.
KEY STATISTICS
- Despite being up 7-3 at halftime, the Westerners were woefully outgained in the first half in total yardage, 189-70. Abilene High finished with 449 yards to just 130 for the Westerners.
- Hines rushed for 99 of his 180 yards after halftime.
- Lubbock High had only 25 yards total offense in the third quarter and ran just nine offensive plays.
