LUBBOCK, Texas — Many people in the community and surrounding areas wait exactly for this time of year so they can show of their creations at the Women’s Building during the South Plains Fair. EverythingLubbock had the chance to catch up with John Nelson, one of the people who won a first-place blue ribbon in the ‘Crafts & Hobbies’ Division for his Segmented Bowl.
“It just tells me that my work is good, not necessarily great, because then I would turn that. Do you know, much nicer stuff? I’m just a beginner compared to guys that have been doing it for 30 years,” he said, and Nelson does not consider it a ‘competition’ but a place to ‘show off.’
Nelson is 75 years old, and for most of his life he worked as a truck driver. In 2003, he moved to Texas to be closer to his family. For a time being, he started a construction and contracting business, doing that for 13 years before he retired in 2018. ‘I haven’t worked since,’ he said.
With Nelson’s work background, he knew how to do specific things related to construction, which sparked a new hobby for him.

“I do a lot of woodworking with crafting and stuff like that. I do a little bit of welding, but mostly wood crafting and turning things. I just love it. It’s fun to make things happen on a piece of wood, and then sometimes I don’t know what it’s going to be until I’m working it,” Nelson said, and for the last two years, he’s created many bowls, tables, whatever comes to his mind.
The Women’s building competitions have nine categories’ folks can enter in. They are listed below:
- Textiles
- Crafts and Hobbies
- Crochet, Knitting, Tatting & Weaving
- Culinary
- Fine Arts
- China Painting
- Relics and Antiques
- Youth
- Honey
People cannot enter in any of the competitions anymore this year and judging is already complete.
