Lubbock student takes 9 years of research to most prestigious high school STEM competition

LUBBOCK, Texas — A Lubbock student was named one of 300 top scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2024, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious STEM competition for high school seniors.

Calvin Carpenter, a high school senior at All Saints Episcopal School, submitted his research project, “Identifying Novel Modes of Inhibition of C. pusillum and B. subtilis Bacteria, Against Deadly Bat Fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans” to the Society for Science.

Calvin told EverythingLubbock.com he’s been conducting this research since the fourth grade for a science fair project.

“In high school, we went to Carlsbad Caverns where I learned about a deadly disease wiping out bats. I decided to do my science fair project on that,” Calvin explained. “It’s cool to know that I am right up there with scientists engaged in cutting edge developments on this research.”

Calvin has represented All Saints as its class president since his sophomore year. He has also been involved in speech and debate, at the State and National level, and powerlifting. Calvin said his biggest mentors are Dr. Harvinder Gill at Texas Tech University and his chemistry teacher at All Saints.
