LUBBOCK, Texas – The owner of the beloved Lubbock food truck, Rico Empanadas, opened a restaurant at 704 US-62 in Wolfforth in January, La Placita.

Owner, Marie Peñalbert, told EverythingLubbock.com on Wednesday the family-run restaurant will have its famous Puerto Rican empanadas as well as a wide variety of Puerto Rican and Caribbean foods.

Peñalbert said La Placita came about after people were asking for more Puerto Rican food. Rico Empanadas is known for its empanadas, but Peñalbert said the community wanted more.

Peñalbert said empanadas are sold everywhere in Puerto Rico and when she came to Lubbock, she couldn’t find her food anywhere.

“Everything I serve is everything I love,” Peñalbert said. “I wanted to bring that to Lubbock.”

La Placita is open Friday through Sunday, but Peñalbert said it plans to open during the week as the restaurant grows more. The restaurant’s menu changes every weekend and it also includes alcoholic drinks such as mojitos and other Caribbean drinks.
