Lubbock family pleads for answers and justice in South Overton shooting

LUBBOCK, Texas –A family is pleading for answers and justice after one of their own was killed in a shooting near 15th Street & Avenue U on January 24.

28-year-old Johnathan Villarreal was found dead by police behind a home in the South Overton area. Through an initial investigation, it was later revealed that 43-year-old, Christopher Carter, was conducting a rental property business with a customer at the property when Villarreal and another person came in.

Police said Carter and Villarreal got into an altercation and Villarreal showed a firearm, that’s when Carter pulled out his gun and shot Villarreal.

“He could have just wanted him to walk them off the property, you know, he could have done something different,” said Villarreal’s aunt, Brenda.

Villarreall’s family described him as “respectful, loving, and silly.” They said he had recently got out of prison in September and was ready to get back on track and be a father to his 10-year-old daughter.
