Lubbock landlord involved in deadly shooting told 911 a man was ‘breaking in’

LUBBOCK, Texas — Christopher Carter, 43, the landlord who shot 28-year-old Jonathan Villarreal in the South Overton neighborhood, told 911 that Villarreal was trying to break into the home at the time of the shooting, a police report obtained by EverythingLubbock.com on Wednesday revealed.

Officers were called to the 2000 block of 15th Street just before 12:30 p.m. on January 24.

A report from the Lubbock Police Department identified Carter as a landlord who was conducting business at a home when Villarreal and another man entered. The report stated Carter called 911 and said someone was “breaking into his property and that he had shot the unknown subject.”

Police walked to the backyard of the residence and found a door to a back apartment opened. The report said a woman was inside who “appeared to be very scared.” The woman told police she was looking at the apartment to possibly rent it when the shooting happened.
