LUBBOCK, Texas — The city of Lubbock codes department starts their day early by patrolling their designated areas.
“Our four main areas of work are weed and rubbish abatement, Junk vehicle abatement, the development code or the old zoning code, and property maintenance,” said Stuart Walker, director of code enforcement for the city of Lubbock.
One Lubbock homeowner frustrated by recent ordinance
According to the department and its website’s code case statistics map, there are 34,463 cases of code violations in the city of Lubbock. The biggest problem with over 21,000 cases is weeds and rubbish.
Walker said they see the most reported violations out of central Lubbock.
Walker said illegal dumping is something they constantly see all over the city. He said newer residents are typically not familiar with the ordinances and are unsure where to take what they are getting rid of.
“That’s probably our number one area of work,” Walker said. “We have a you know, regularly we have a new set of residents that are new to Lubbock due to our growth…So with it is educating the community with folks, that’s our number one tool for compliance.”
