Construction to begin in Lubbock on unsafe road near Upland Ave. and 98th St.

LUBBOCK, Texas — For residents who live near 98th Street near Upland Avenue and Alcove Avenue, leaving and coming back to their homes is no easy task. The dirt road that stretches in front of their homes kicks up rocks and floods in the rain, creating traffic close to the nearby elementary school.

This road is in line to be redone along with 22 other miles of streets around Lubbock. This is part of a $200 million bond to fund major road improvements that Lubbock voters approved in 2022.

EverythingLubbock.com spoke with residents who live close to 98th Street in between Upland Avenue and Alcove Avenue on Thursday who said they are hoping to see their road fixed soon, since is it a part of the road bond.

“It’s rough … you’re literally jolting up and down the whole time and it’s just bad for your car. Rocks are like flying up at your windshield,” Taylor Black, a resident near 98th Street said.

The road improvements near Black were delayed as the City of Lubbock needed to acquire a right of way permit first, however, City of Lubbock Engineer Mike Keenum said construction will start there on February 12.
