LUBBOCK, Texas — Bridgette Castillo is a tattoo artist with a decade of experience and has worked at one of Lubbock’s most popular tattoo shops, Stay True Tattoo, for two years. Despite her success, she still faces the challenges of being one of the few tattoo artists who specializes in tattooing black skin in Lubbock.

Castillo told EverythingLubbock.com she’s tattooed all over the United States and found herself back in Lubbock almost three years ago.

“I kind of just traveled around and was tattooing all over the US. And I settled back down here and loved it because that’s where I’m from originally,” Castillo said.

Castillo explained the minority tattoo scene in Lubbock isn’t very big, and it’s hard to find someone who shares similar experiences that come with being a Black tattoo artist in a predominantly white community.

“The way people just come in like it’s nothing and ask you to cover something that’s super offensive,” Castillo said. She recalled a time when a group of young men showed up and wanted her to cover a rebel flag tattoo.
