Visually impaired artist creates mural at Lubbock play park

Lubbock, Texas — Milestones Development and Play Park opened back in December and murals are painted along the walls of the party rooms and the artist said she is happy to be a part of the park with her murals because she can relate to individual with abilities.

Scout Sonnenberg told EverythingLubbock.com that she is visually impaired and has severe photophobia and glaucoma. She was born with glaucoma and by age three, she was completely blind in her right eye.

After many doctors and surgeries because of her condition, Sonnenberg found comfort in going to and from the surgeries.

“I think I just live to make and create for me,” Sonnenberg said. “I’ve had a lot of surgeries and art was one thing that I would do on the way to those surgeries to kind of calm myself down, even before I really knew what that meant or how to put words to it.”

The executive director of Milestones, Cassie Johnston, said she has known Sonnenberg for years and when Sonnenberg posted about doing her first mural, Johnston knew she was the one who needed to paint the murals for the park.
