What happened to the rides at Lubbock’s beloved Joyland?

LUBBOCK, Texas — If you’ve driven by the old Joyland recently, as expected it’s starting to look a little emptier by the day. The Lubbock amusement park has been liquidating what’s left of the attractions, after the place where the fun had been for 50 years, closed abruptly last year.

“Beginning of January of 2023, we all got on the phone and they said, ‘Hey, we’re going to sell everything,”” described Samuel Shurgott, President of International Rides Management (IRM) .

Shurgott and others with IRM have been in charge of what he calls, “retiring” the attractions, or finding a new, trusted park owner to sell them to.

“I don’t like to use the term liquidation; it sounds like everything’s ending… so we called it a retirement and we basically went out with our contacts of family owned parks and selectively targeted certain park owners,” Shurgott said.

Shurgott spent all of 2023, making calls and visits to different parks, trying to find the 30-or-so rides left at Joyland.
