Art Canyon: A hidden gem for Lubbock creatives

LUBBOCK, Texas — It’s taken over a decade for Art Canyon to become what it is today, according to its co-owners Robert Rogers and Caroline Byrd.

“We’re looking for something unusual, and this is kind of a big art project for us,” Rogers explained.

On the outskirts of Lubbock County, past Woodrow Road, is where the 45-acre caliche pit lies after excavators dug it for rock to use on Loop 289.

“This is our home, and it’s a canyon we’ve had since 2005,” said Byrd. “We bought it then and have built various buildings since then.”

Rogers and Byrd are part of Lubbock’s art scene, and it’s evident by the pieces throughout the canyon. According to the duo, creative space only fosters more creativity, especially when Rogers and Byrd host the Hub City’s most talented artists and musicians.

“We love giving back to the art community because that’s kind of where we got all of our start,” Rogers said.

One of their biggest events in the past year was ‘Art in the Canyon,’ which highlighted 22 artists across the studio, casita and other buildings on the property. According to Rogers and Bryd, about 400 people came through to buy different pieces and enjoy each other’s company.
