Lubbock couple celebrates Valentine’s Day with 70 years of marriage

LUBBOCK, Texas — 70 years after they got married, Barbara and Gene Mathia still look at each other with a light in their eyes and still hold onto each other’s hands as if they’re freshly in love. In honor of their seven decades together, they’ve chosen to celebrate it with a wedding ceremony where they’ll renew their vows.

After all – they never had the traditional wedding ceremony all those years ago.

“I got off [work] at 7:42 p.m. and we got married at 8 o’clock in a chapel. I never looked back,” Gene said.

The vow renewal will be on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at their assisted living home. They’ll be alongside 50 friends and family members as they commemorate their long-lasting love. The married couple told EverythingLubbock.com that they couldn’t wait for it.

“I would marry you all over again. In fact, we’ll get married again,” Barbara said to her husband, Gene.

After all of their years together, Gene and Barbara said they don’t get tired of each other.
